WHITMAN, Mass – Whitman-Hanson (5-3) is on the road to redemption after being a declining program the last few years. Thursday afternoon the Panthers beat first year varsity program Cardinal Spellman 19-9.
The Panthers spread the wealth against Spellman, with 11 different players scoring at least one goal.
Shawn Fleming, Sean Auger, Ryan Kennedy, Joe Arico, Colin Downing, and Joe Collett contributed goals. Captain Anthony Polito added in two goals and one assists during the blowout win, all coming in the first quarter.
Senior Captain Adam McCormack netted five goals, and had 4 assists for the Panthers in the routing of the Cardinals. McCormack talked about the team effort saying “we wanted to set the tone early, and even though we stepped of the brake a little during the third quarter we collected ourselves and finished the game strong.”
First year Head Coach Rob White talked about how important groundballs were to the game plan. “It’s all about groundballs, we came up with the today which lead to the victory.”
Whitman-Hanson’s defense suffocated the Spellman attack, double teaming the Cardinals whenever they attempted to make a break for the net.
Sophomore Goaltender Bradley Lynch stood tall in net with eleven saves for the Panthers.
Captain Mike Doherty, a senior defenseman who has played varsity since his freshman year went coast to coast to score his first career varsity goal, giving the Panthers a commanding 17-9 lead with 9:09 left in the fourth.
White also talked about “this is their first year (Spellman), we worked on our plays, and played with class, not sticking it into anyone’s face as we as a program where once there ourselves. Spellman also played with extreme class, and there were no cheap plays, which in games like these can be pretty relevant.”
