WHITMAN, Mass -- There was a wild finish at Panther Park Thursday afternoon, with the outfield being the major difference for the Panthers.
Whitman-Hanson (2-4) got the offense rolling early in the 5-4 victory over Patriot League foe Hanover. The Panther’s bats seemed to be hot from the first pitch of Hanover starter Matt Sointu, as Nate Perkins cracked a single past the Indian’s shortstop.
Panther’s Head Coach Dave Fouracre talked about Thursday’s starter Colin Josselyn. “Colin pitched hard for us today, and was able to stay composed when getting squeezed late in the game.” Josselyn had five strikeouts, and two walks, in 6 1/3 solid innings on the mound for the Panthers.
Nick Haley, the Sophomore Outfielder hit an RBI triple, narrowly missing a homerun as it hit off the outfield fence in centerfield. Whitman-Hanson now took a 3-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
The Panther’s defense was essential to Thursday’s victory. Senior Zach Perkins threw a bullet from center to home plate to end the sixth inning, keeping the Indians scoreless.
In the seventh inning the Panthers got into a jam, with bases loaded Joseph Pretorius came in to get the save. With two outs and Whitman-Hanson up 5-3 Pretorius releases the pitch, and Hanover’s Justin Paskell connects, sending the ball down the third baseline.
Leftfielder Nick Villanueva guns the baseball towards home plate, with the tying run for Hanover rounding third. Evan Derochea blocks the plate as the ball lands in his glove, applying the tag for the game winning out.
Fouracre talked about sealing the deal in late game situations. “We have been struggling late in games recently; we have had ourselves in every ballgame, losing three games by one run this season but managed to pull this one out behind some great outfield play.”
